How to Tie a Scarf Like Our Display Scarves September 10 2014, 60 Comments

It's still a wee bit warm here, but very soon the weather will be crisp and cool and we're all going to be looking to bundle up! It's hard to imagine right now, but, soon enough. The perfect item to add a little warmth and style all at once? A scarf! Periwinkle carries a wide selection from gauzy and dreamy to fuzzy and knit, there is sure to be something perfect for every outfit.

Many of our scarves displayed here on PeriwinkleEmporium.com and in store are tied in the same way. Our signature knot looks fancy and complicated but is so easy to tie!

Step 1: Start with a longish scarf and fold it directly in half. Drape around your neck so the fold is on one side and the loose ends on the other:

Step 2: Choose one of the two ends and pull it through the loop of the fold. Take hold of fold and pull it away from the end that was brought through:

Step 3: Give this loop a twist. A full twist should separate the fold from the end that had been brought through. Take the other end and pull this through the new loop:

Step 5: Just a little styling, fan the lower end out and give the higher end a little tug towards center before fanning it out as well. You're done! So easy -- if you are careful, this will slip over your head to take it off and can be slipped back on again!

Have You Seen Our Toy Selection? September 09 2014, 0 Comments

Periwinkle loves toys! We have a fabulous selection of Melissa & Doug toys. Melissa & Doug make quality, durable and educational toys and value pricing. They stand behind their product, too -- should something not last as intended, please return it, either here to the store or to the Melissa & Doug customer service team.

Many of the toys feature vintage styling -- crafted from wood to last through years of use. They look like the toys Mom and Dad enjoyed -- or Grandma and Grandpa!

Many feature multiple play options, so that the toy may hold up to extended play time! The packaging helpfully suggests alternative ways to play with the same toy.

We have a selection offered here in our Toys SHOP, a ever-changing representative sampling of the Melissa & Doug line. Or stop by the store to see all that is available!

How to Wrap Ribbon Around a Box Neatly September 06 2014, 2 Comments

We wrap a lot of boxes here at Periwinkle. Over 3,000 for Christmas alone! With all that practice, a rather distinct wrapping style has emerged. We need tidy and efficient! Our finished boxes have smoothly ribboned bottoms that sit flat and present the ribbon well. As an added bonus, keeping ribbon on the bolt until nearly finished eliminates the frustration of cutting not quite enough and the waste of cutting too much!

Our finished box bottoms look like this:

Step 1: Don't cut anything yet! Start by unrolling enough ribbon to circle the box and tie half a bow, about a foot is good. If you will be making a fancy pom pom to tie on, leave only enough for a knot, about 6 inches will suffice. Lay the ribbon out across the top of the box with your bow or knot portion below the half way point, like this:

Step 2: Circle the ribbon around the box making sure it is smooth and untwisted. One side is still connected to the bolt. Make a twist here and send the side connected to the bolt off to the left.

Step 3: Circle the ribbon around the box making sure it is smooth and untwisted. When you bring it back to the original twist, determine how much ribbon you will need -- a bow is about a foot, a knot 6 inches. Now you cut from the bolt. Tuck the newly cut piece under the original twist (it will travel towards the boxes upper left corner and then back under the twist towards the boxes lower right corner.) Pull on the tucked end and the starting end and something like a knot forms. This will hold until you tie a bow or can tie down a pom pom!

Yay! You have a neatly ribboned box that sits completely flat! No wasteful scraps of ribbon and no flipping the box this way and that or over!

Unique Repurposed Vintage Jewelry from Grouse & Badger September 03 2014, 0 Comments

I was so excited to find Grouse & Badger at the World Market Center Las Vegas Gift + Home Show this past winter. This husband and wife teams tears apart old unrepairable watches and typewriters and reimagines the bits as amazing jewelry pieces. At that first show I purchased lovely vintage watch face and typewriter key bracelets.

Aren't they charming? They disappeared quickly-- so, when I saw them at the GALLA show this July, I had to bring in lots! More watch face and typewriter key bracelets, as well as sweet heart shaped charm necklaces filled with gears, dangling x & o typewriter key necklaces, and this Time Flies necklace.

Each piece is handmade, unique, and completely one-of-a-kind. I've listed a selection here in our One-of-a-Kind SHOP, but there are more, too! If you are looking for more, just let me know -- I'd love to send pictures of pieces we have here in stock. Of course, I'd love to have you visit us here in the downtown Glendora Village, too!

Are you ready for the next holiday celebration? September 02 2014, 1 Comment

September 19th is Talk Like a Pirate Day! Periwinkle will be celebrating in store with pirate snacks, songs and, of course, pirate talk. I'd love for you to visit for our pirate festivities from 6 - 8:00 p.m.

To get your home or office ready for the festivities, perhaps a Pirate banner?

We made this fun skull & crossbones banner using just black and white paper and string! If you're nearby, stop by to use our Accucut to cut three pennant shapes. The scraps from the black sheet of paper are cut into stripes-- no need for perfect straight lines, pirates aren't perfect! The scrap from the white paper becomes the skull & crossbones. Just a little glue stick and you are set.

Visit Periwinkle to make bunting! Our D.I.Y. Banner Station is quick and easy to use.

A selection of precut pennants are available to choose from. You'll need one for each letter of the words you would like to spell out. If you are covering a lot of room, grab extras for each side.

If you would like colors or patterns not available in a precut pennant, our Accucut machine is available for use. If you purchase your paper here, use is complimentary. You may bring in your own paper or fabric, too! For 50¢ a cut, you can use our machine on product purchased elsewhere. It is as easy as turning a crank, the Accucut cuts perfect pennants already pre punched for stringing.

We have precut letters to spell out your message and circles to mount them on. If you'd like to assemble here at the store, borrow our glue stick and sit down at our crafting table -- we have everything available to complete your project.

After gluing letters to circles and circles pennants, just string together! We suggest colorful baker's twine, sold by the bolt or yard. We have ribbon available for decorative fringe, too. It is sold by the foot so you can get lots of different patterns, textures and colors!

There are art glass pumpkins in oranges, browns, and greens, glittery and sparkly owls for the wall and the table top, and lots of burlap trims. We're decking the store for the fall!
